New Delhi: A day after a Fifa official expressed his “surprise” over the scoreline of the Dempo versus Air India match in the 2011 I-League, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) admitted that results of some matches in the recent past did raise some suspicion.
While talking to the media at the end of the Fifa-Interpol workshop on match fixing and corruption in football on Thursday, AIFF vice president Subroto Dutta said: “Results of some matches were fishy. But there was no evidence.
“At the same time, there was no reason to believe the matches were fixed, just because 10 or 14 goals were scored in those matches,” Dutta said.
On Wednesday, one of the Fifa officials attending the workshop said the world body was surprised by the result of the Dempo-Air India match, which was won 14-0 by the Goan side.
The officials of both teams, however, vehemently denied any match-fixing and said it was played in the right spirit.
