Rape accused held in Delhi

Ranchi, Jan. 12: A special team from Lohardaga police station today arrested one Nasir Ansari (21) from a slum area in Madipur police station area of Delhi for raping a Class X tribal girl on January 5.

“Nasir is in our custody. He is likely to be brought here on Tuesday,” superintendent of police (SP) Sunil Bhaskar told The Telegraph over phone from the national capital.

On that fateful Sunday, the victim was on her way to a coaching centre in Kisko police station area of Lohardagga when Ansari dragged her to a nearby field and raped her. The girl filed an FIR the same day, accusing Ansari of raping her twice — on January 5 and three months ago also. He had then allegedly threatened her of dire consequences, if she opened up her mouth.

The incident sparked widespread public outrage. First the residents gheraoed Kisko thana and followed it up with blockades and forced closure of shops and education institutions. Several women’s organisation, too, came on the forefront to stage demonstration with traditional weapons. Yesterday, the protesters paralysed normal life in the district for over seven hours. They all had one demand: Immediate arrest of the culprit.

Meanwhile the accused fled to Delhi. According to sources, Ansari used to supply domestic helps in Delhi.

Faced with severe criticism from different quarters, police started mounting pressure on family members of Ansari, a resident of Kisko block in Lohardaga. Ansari’s brother Kalam was reportedly beaten up by police yesterday. He was admitted to sadar hosital from where he was shifted to RIMS in Ranchi. SP Bhaskar suspended a trainee sub-inspector for thrashing Kalam.

Arrest

In another incident, one Mahfooz Khan (22) was arrested yesterday for allegedly raping a minor girl in Sisai police station area of Gumla on Friday evening. Around 10pm, the girl had gone out to relieve herself when Khan accosted her at gunpoint. He took her to a makeshift granary, about 3km away from the victim’s house, and allegedly raped her all through the night. She was allowed to leave next morning with a warning that she would keep her mouth shut. The girl filed an FIR in the afternoon.
