Class IX girl raped in assault belt

Barasat, Jan. 11: A Class IX girl was allegedly gangraped by three youths tonight in Gaighata, North 24-Parganas, the fourth such atrocity in the district in three months.

Police said the 15-year-old girl was returning home from a shop after buying books around 9pm when a woman of her village called her.

“The woman told the girl to wait and left the place. After some time, the three youths arrived and dragged her to a nearby field and took turns to rape her,” a police officer said.

The police said the youths were known to the girl, whose father is a mason.

“The youths took the girl’s picture in the nude and threatened to circulate if she reported the incident,” the officer said.

After returning home, the girl narrated the incident to her parents, who lodged a police complaint.

Bhaskar Mukherjee, the additional superintendent of police of North 24-Parganas, said two of the accused had been arrested. The third youth and the woman who had told the girl to wait are absconding.

In October last year, a girl was raped twice in two days in North 24-Parganas’s Madhyamgram. The 16-year-old died of burn injuries she sustained after she allegedly set herself ablaze. Days later, a deaf-and-mute girl was gangraped in Baduria. In December, another girl was raped in Habra.

Earlier last year, a girl was raped and murdered in Kamduni in the same district.
