Teachers of two unions clash

Siliguri, Jan. 8: Teachers affiliated to Trinamul and CPM associations clashed at the office of the district inspector of schools (higher secondary), Siliguri educational district, here today over the submission of memorandums.

According to members of West Bengal Trinamul Secondary Teachers’ Association (WBTSTA), they had an appointment with Sanjib Ghosh, the district inspector, at 1.30pm today. They were submitting a memorandum to him when members of the All Bengal Teachers’ Association, affiliated to the CPM, barged in and allegedly started misbehaving with Ghosh.

“We had a 19-point charter of demands that included stopping donations during admission in different schools, and resumption of mid-day meals...,” said Jayanta Kar, the convener of Trinamul Siksha Cell under which the WBTSTA functions.

“During the talks, around five members of ABTA, including Tamal Chanda, the association’s Darjeeling district secretary, barged in and started speaking rudely with Ghosh,” Kar said.

He added that when Pradip Atar, the Darjeeling district convener of the WBTSTA, protested, he was assaulted.

ABTA members have denied the allegation and accused the supporters of the WBTSTA of assaulting three of their members.

When Sanjib Ghosh was contacted, he said : “There was some chaos here between members of two teachers’ outfits. I will look into the demands placed by both organisations.”
