Lakhimpur/Tezpur, Jan. 8: A group of five persons today made an abortive attempt to kidnap a 14-year-old girl from Bihpuria Rajabari in Lakhimpur district this morning.

Police sources said the group abducted the Class VIII student Tulumoni Goala from Rajabari around 9.30am today while she was going to school and whisked her away in a white car. According to the girl, the vehicle was proceeding towards Arunachal Pradesh, when it developed a technical problem at Singia, around 3km from Bihpuria, which is around 30km from Lakhimpur. Tulumoni said a girl, who was among the abductors, then told her to run.

According to her, there were five persons inside the car with their faces covered with black cloth. She could not recall the registration number or the company the car belonged to.

Irfan Ali Ahmed, officer in-charge of Bihpuria police station, told The Telegraph they have started search operations in the area bordering Arunachal to trace the group. Lakhimpur superintendent of police P.K. Bhuyan said, “It may not be a case of abduction as no one had seen the girl being kidnapped or when she escaped but an investigation is on.”

According to the police, cases of kidnapping, rape, robbery and murders have been on the rise in the district in the past few months.
