A fire on the Bandra-Dehradun Express early on Wednesday morning killed nine passengers.
The blaze came less than two weeks after a train fire killed 26 people in Andhra.
Officials said a bigger tragedy was averted on Wednesday when an alert gateman at a level crossing spotted smoke from the one of the coaches of the train as it passed his stretch in Thane.
The gateman informed officials at Gholwad, the nearest station, but the fire had spread to three coaches — S-2, and S-3 and S-4 — by the time the train reached there. Five of the nine bodies were identified. The others are charred beyond recognition. Officials suspect a short circuit.
