Rape stench in triple murder

Behrampore, Jan. 7: The girl and her mother found dead in their flat in Behrampore town were raped, said an official of Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted.

Yesterday, the bodies of the 18-year-old girl, her 42-year-old mother and an elderly lady relative were found in the two-bedroom flat in Behrampore town. The bodies of the mother and daughter were unclothed, and that of the relative, who was over 70 years old, was found tied to a bed.

The police had lodged a murder case. Today, they refused to confirm anything till they receive the post-mortem report.

The Murshidabad Medical College official said: “The private parts of the young girl bore multiple injuries and there were injury marks on her mouth and chest. According to our findings, more than one person raped her. We have also found some substance in her stomach that suggests drugs. We have collected samples and we will send it for forensic tests to determine the nature of drug.”

The official added that all three were throttled to death and the girl’s mother, who according to a relative was an insurance agent, was also raped.

“We have started a murder case. We will not say anything more till we get the post-mortem report,” said Murshidabad district superintendent of police Humayun Kabir.

An investigating officer said six dinner plates were found on the dinning table when the police broke into the flat yesterday.

An officer said: “Parathas and sweets were found, which indicates that those who had come to the house were known to the dead persons. We suspect that at least four persons had come to the ground-floor flat before the murders took place.”

The mother-daughter duo were last seen in the locality on Saturday, after which their flat had been locked from outside.

Residents said yesterday that the family always informed neighbours before going anywhere for a few days, but this time they had not. Suspecting something was amiss, some neighbours called up the police.

According to a relative, the mother of the girl became an insurance agent after her husband deserted her about a year and a half ago. Th apartment was in her name. The relative said the elderly woman who lived with the mother and daughter was a retired government employee and the family was dependent on her pension of Rs 7,000 and some monthly income scheme investments.

“After questioning the neighbours, we learnt that people used to visit the flat. She referred to the visitors as insurance customers. The neighbours also told us that the mother and daughter used to visit a beauty parlour at least twice a month. We suspect that those who committed the crime were known to the middle-aged lady,” the officer said.

Sources said the ground-floor apartment was worth between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh.

Junior railway minister Adhir Chowdhury today took out a march of Congress workers to protest the alleged rise in crime in the town.
