Property tax now a click away

Guwahati, Jan. 6: Taxpayers in the city can now pay property tax by the click of a mouse.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation today launched a portal with the objective of making property tax payment convenient for its citizens and to encourage timely collection of tax.

Citizens of Guwahati may log on to www.gmcportal.in to view their property tax bill and make the payment.

GMC commissioner S. Vishwanathan inaugurated the facility.

Taxpayers can make online payment through different banks, using three modes — credit card, debit card and net banking.

“Initially, the transaction charges for using this online payment facility by the citizens will be borne by the GMC. This online payment facility will be free of cost for citizens,” an official source said.

Any issue regarding use of this online payment facility may be mailed to propertytaxgmc@gmcportal.in.

The website also contains terms and conditions of payment along with refund and cancellation policy.

“We started the initiative for online payment gateway in December 2012 by calling for bids from various payment gateway service providers. Finally, the corporation selected Billdesk as online payment gateway service provider,” the source said.

The online payment gateway’s user manual is uploaded in the website for easy assistance to the citizens for using the service.

Property tax has been the prime source of municipal revenue for the GMC.

At present, there are 176,099 holdings within the corporation boundary with a total property tax demand of nearly Rs 27 crore and a collection of around Rs 25 crore.
