22-year-old arrested for molesting minor

Malda, Jan. 5: A 22-year-old youth was thrashed by local people and handed over to the police after he allegedly molested an eight-year-old girl in a village in Chanchal near here yesterday evening.

A police source said Sukuruddin Ali spotted the girl when she was returning alone from school.

“The youth lured her by telling her that he would buy her chocolate and took her to an under-construction house. As he started molesting the girl, she shouted. This caught the attention of some local people who rescued the girl and thrashed the youth. The police reached the spot and arrested Ali. He was produced at a court in Chanchal today and sent to jail custody for 14 days,” said Kalyan Mukherjee, the superintendent of police of Malda.

The youth has been booked under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

The girl’s father, has filed an FIR. “We want Sukuruddin to be punished,” he said.

A Chanchal police official said the girl’s statement had been recorded. “As she is a minor, we have done a video recording of her statement,” Jayanta Lodh, the inspector-in-charge of Chanchal police station said.

A search is also on by the police to arrest the accused persons who had allegedly raped and murdered a 22-year-old girl at Sujapur near here on Friday.
