Jamshedpur, Jan. 4: Jamshedpur police, facing flak for the rising crime graph in the city, managed a face-saver today by arresting a member of the gang behind the January 1 Mango twin killings and the murder bid on a Golmuri trader on December 23.
Acting on intelligence inputs, police picked up Chotelal Prasad (21) from his Kitadih residence this morning. The two others — kingpin Maya Bhagat, alias Munna Shaw, alias Lulla (25), and Mintu Gupta (22) — have been identified.
Presenting Chotelal before the media today, East Singhbhum senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amol V. Homkar said the same gang had looted two outlets on January 1 after shooting dead Baiju Shaw after an eve-teasing incident and neighbour Shakuntala Mishra at Sankosai in Olidih Mango.
Another of Baiju’s neighbours, Sonu Kumar Rajak, sustained bullet injuries.
“Maya and Mintu, both hailing from Akopur locality in Siwan district of Bihar, are at large. The two, along with Chotelal, were involved in most of the shooting, loot and murder cases in the city in the past few months. Though Chotelal also hails from Siwan district, he stayed in Jamshedpur and acted as a local link for the gang,” said Homkar.
He added that the three used to behave unnaturally under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
“Maya fires whimsically over minor issues. He recently bought a flat at Kitadih, Parsudih, and had rented houses in Chotagovindpur. He frequently changes his address after committing crimes,” the SSP said.
A joint police team is carrying out searches across the city, while another has been sent to Bihar in search of the two.
On January 1, Maya and Mintu, along with their families, had gone for a picnic at Narwapahar in Jadugora. A fight broke out between them and Baiju and his friends over an incident of eve-teasing.
Maya then decided to kill Baiju and called Chotelal. The three followed Baiju and his friends and returned after seeing where he lived.
They came back around 8pm, called for Baiju and shot him dead.
On hearing the gun shots, neighbour Shakuntala stepped out screaming and the three fired at her too. Similarly, Sonu, another neighbour, was shot at as he also screamed.
“While returning after the gun attacks, the gang looted around Rs 40,000 from a iron rod dealer shop on Station Road in Jugsalai and stole Rs 15,000 in cash and two liquor crates from an IMFL outlet in Parsudih,” Honkar said.
Police have recovered a bike and 9mm pistol from Chotelal’s possession.
The SUV in which the group had gone to Jadugora for a picnic has been also seized along with Rs 5,700 in cash, liquor crates, two mobile phones and 15 mobile chargers, jackets and masks.
The trio had also shot at and injured trader Amit Agarwal at Tinplate, Golmuri, for Rs 15,000 on December 23.
