Girl parents to meet Pranab

Calcutta, Jan. 4: The Madhyamgram gang-rape victim’s parents will meet President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 7 to demand a CBI probe into the death of the 16-year-old girl.

The parents will also tell the President about how police allegedly harassed them by forcibly taking their daughter’s body for cremation after she died of burn injuries on December 31. The girl had allegedly set herself on fire following threats from relatives and friends of the accused to drop the case.

A seven member BJP team, led by former Bihar minister Renu Devi, today met the girl’s parents and assured them of all possible help. “They expressed their sympathy to the family, assured them of all possible help and demanded justice,” state BJP secretary Ritesh Tiwari, who was also part of the team, said.

The girl’s parents told the team members that the accused had raped the girl twice and they came to know that she was pregnant after her death. Police has registered a case of murder against the two main accused in the gang rape. Doctors said she was pregnant at the time of her death. The girl’s father said Citu leader Shyamal Chakraborty had arranged for the visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The parents will be accompanied by two relatives. They will take a flight to Delhi and return on January 8.

“We have been given an appointment around 1.30pm at Rashtrapati Bhavan. We are eagerly waiting to speak to the President and demand a CBI probe. We’ll narrate to him the ordeal we had to face before and after my daughter’s death,” said the girl’s father, a taxi driver. The father said the family had got “no help” from the state government. “The police failed to protect my daughter. No one from the forensic lab visited the room in which my daughter was seen engulfed in flames. I will tell all these to the President,” he said.

The teenager was gang-raped twice in as many days in Madhyamgram in October — the second time while she was returning home after reporting the crime to the police.

The girl’s father today went to his rented house near Dum Dum airport to collect some documents related to her treatment. “I have not come here to stay. I could be murdered if I spend a night here,” he said. Citu sources said Chakraborty would accompany the parents to Rashtrapati Bhavan as he would be in Delhi on January 7. “The President has given us appointment on January 7. We are always with the victim’s family,” Chakraborty said.

After the Kamduni rape and murder of a college girl last year, her family members and other villagers had met President Mukherjee. Junior railway minister and Murshidabad Congress strongman Adhir Chowdhury had fixed the appointment. The family’s demand for a CBI probe into the murder had been turned down by the Supreme Court.
