Criminals in net, lens on role of agencies

Motihari, Jan. 4: Two Patna-based private security agencies have come under the scanner with the arrest of a criminal gang from Raxaul yesterday.

One Ajit Kumar alias Monu Shukla and 13 members of his gang were arrested and police have seized firearms, fake arms licence, 32 live cartridges and cash worth Rs 50,000 from them.

The arrests were made following a tip-off according to which the gang was supposed to kill someone involved in a land dispute near Raxaul, East Champaran superintendent of police Vinay Kumar said.

“For the past one year, Monu Shukla and his gang members played an active role in land grabbing in Raxaul. They had been dealing in issues of controversial land disputes by terrorising the people concerned and taking high commission from them. They had established an atmosphere of terror in the area,” Vinay said.

The role of two security agencies of Patna has also come under the scanner. “Several documents, including duty card, NOC and other papers related to two security agencies of Patna, have also been recovered from the arrested persons. Several other documents that were seized from the arrested persons have been put under study,” Vinay said.

The licences seized from the arrested persons have been issued from Jammu & Kashmir, Madhepura and Jehanabad and bore several marks of confiscation, Vinay said. The police may constitute a cell to probe into the matter because they suspect that the criminals are associated with the security agencies.

The gang functions in Raxaul, since it is a bordering area and the price of the land is on par with that of Mumbai and other metropolitan cities of the country, the superintendent of police said.
