Clashes mar poll form collection in colleges

Alipurduar, Jan. 3: Around 15 students were injured today in separate clashes at five colleges in Jalpaiguri district on the first day of the collection of nomination forms to contest in students’ union elections.

SFI leaders have alleged that in at least five colleges in the district, they were stopped from collecting nomination forms and were attacked.

Around 11am, distribution of nomination forms commenced in the colleges at Dhupguri, Falakata, Birpara, Alipurduar and Kamakhyaguri in Jalpaiguri district. Except in Alipurduar, supporters of the Trinamul Chattra Parishad and the SFI clashed while collecting the forms.

In Alipurduar, the clash took place between Chhatra Parishad and Trinamul Chattra Parishad supporters.

In Dhupguri, SFI leaders alleged that Trinamul Chhatra Parishad supporters attacked them. Police went to the spot and resorted to a lathi-charge. They even fired five rounds of teargas to disperse the students. Four students were injured in the clash.

In Falakata, alleged Trinamul Chhatra Parishad workers ransacked a vehicle carrying SFI workers to the college. Two SFI workers suffered serious injuries and were taken to Siliguri for treatment. In protest, the SFI blocked NH31 at Falakata from 2pm to 3.45pm.

In Birpara and Kamakhyaguri also, SFI workers were stopped by alleged Trinamul Chhatra Parishad from collecting nomination forms.

In Kamakhyaguri, when police tried to end the clash, a Trinamul Chhatra Parishad worker was injured and he was admitted to the Alipurduar hospital. Classes were suspended in all the five colleges.

Akash Magharia, the assistant superintendent of police, Alipurduar, said: “We have received complaints and have started investigations.”
