Prepak rebel arrested

Shillong, Jan. 3: Meghalaya police yesterday arrested a self-styled “captain” of the Manipur-based militant outfit, Peoples Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak), from a locality here.

Prepak is one of the major militant groups in Manipur and a constituent member of Coordination Committee, known as CorCom in short, an umbrella body of six militant groups. The group has refused to respond to the offer of peace talks.

Based on specific inputs, a raid was conducted at Lumshyiap Nongmynsong by a SWAT team last night, East Khasi Hills superintendent of police M. Kharkrang said today. The police apprehended Moirangthem Boboi Singh, 37, of Yairipok in Thoubal, Kharkrang said.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Singh had been staying in Shillong, along with his family, to evade arrest by Manipur police.

He has been remanded in 10 days’ police custody. Two laptops, four pen drives, eight chequebooks of different banks, three SIM cards, two debit cards, two mobiles, one I-Pad and other items were recovered from him.

The news of Singh’s arrest has been sent to Manipur police.

The police in Imphal said they had received information about the arrest and will send a team to Meghalaya for interrogation.
