Imphal, Jan. 1: The Manipur government is planning a special package for women footballers in the state, encouraged by their stellar performance in the national arena.
According to sources, a blueprint was being prepared on the contents of the package. It will include a special grooming programme, with advanced training abroad for talented girls. The girls will be selected from schools clubs.
The announcement comes soon after the under-17 Manipur girls won the Subroto Mukherjee Cup national school football championship for the second time this year.
Radha Madhav Sanskriti Vidyalaya, Nambol in Bishnupur district have claimed the title last year overcoming Government Higher Secondary School, Haryana 6-4 via tiebreakers after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time in New Delhi in September.
The first edition of Subroto Cup was won by Oriental English School, Keibi from Imphal East in 2012.
L. Chaoba Devi, who coached Radha Madhav Sanskriti Vidyalaya, said, “It was the teamwork and dedication of the young girls that made things go in our favour. We played five matches and won each of them by clear margins.”
She added, “Our first game was against Delhi who we beat by 13-0 goals and then Assam by 7-0 goals, then IPSC by 9-0 goals to make our way to the semi-final. We beat Mizoram by 5-1 goals to sail into the final where we beat Haryana for the title.”
