Cardinal’s resolutions

Ranchi, Jan. 1: If you have promised to work harder this year and your friend has vowed to cut down on his/her expenses, Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo, too, has made a few New Year resolutions.

A medical college and hospital, increased communication among church congregations, improving church services and putting his own house in order feature among the Cardinal’s vows for 2014.

“There are many things that I had intended to do in the past three years, particularly putting my own house — the Ranchi Archdiocese — in order. But, my frequent travels as archbishop of Ranchi and as the Cardinal have taken too much of my time. In 2014, I intend to do what I could not in the last couple of years,” Cardinal Toppo said.

He added that his dream project — a medical college and a 500-bed hospital — topped his priority list.

“I had to persuade Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops to agree on setting up a medical college and hospital in Ranchi. In February 2012, we had identified a plot near Khunti and even held the stone laying ceremony. But divisive forces thwarted my efforts. This year, I intend to kick-start the project. We have looked at various plots in and around Ranchi. Once we get the possession, we will approach corporate houses for help,” said Toppo.

Lamenting over poor communication among different congregations of Roman Catholic Church, Toppo said that improved communications at all levels was the need of the hour.

At the parish level, the Cardinal hopes to set up specialised committees and rope in lay men and women to bring in fresh ideas. He also feels that the church services need to be bettered. “Proper training will be arranged for the altar boys and girls and for even those assisting the priest,” he added.
