The 2014 sporting calendar of Ranchi has started with a big backlog.
The state has missed the December 31 revamp deadline of Astroturf Hockey Stadium for the second season of Hockey India League (HIL).
HIL-2 is slated to kick off on January 26.
The zeal with which the makeover plans for Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Morabadi, Ranchi, were drawn up, proved to be inadequate when it came to executing them.
If Hockey Jharkhand officials are to be believed, less than 30 per cent work has been completed till date.
Though sports department officials maintain that work is on, Hockey Jharkhand fear last minute work means a shoddy job and may leave the state embarrassed before national and international guests.
“Activities like cleaning of galleries begun only four-five days ago,” said a senior official of Hockey Jharkhand.
According to Hockey Jharkhand treasurer Suresh Kumar, quality light, proper sanitation facilities, clear turf and goal posts were the primary things that needed to be put in order before the tournament.
“As of now none of these are in place. Few workers are engaged in cleaning galleries. Nothing is known about the replacement of goalposts or of extra toilets. We gave the sports department a to-do list long ago,” he added.
Sports director Dadan Choubey, however, sounded relaxed. “The delay was due to technical glitches. Everything will be in place,” said Choubey.
HIL tournament director Todd Faulds had given poor feedback when he visited the stadium in November, 2013. In response, sports minister Geetashree Oraon asked officials to ensure all is well within December 31.
