Mela address for utility stalls

Worried over how to apply for a voter ID or Aadhaar card? Want to get a new water or electricity connection? Visit Rashtriya Khadi Ewam Saras Mahotsav at Morabadi grounds in Ranchi before January 10.

Yes, you read it right. The ongoing edition of the acclaimed annual fair for handloom products has much more to offer. Of the 500-odd kiosks at Saras Mela, some 15 offer essential services that in the normal course make people run from one administrative building to the other.

Besides Aadhaar or voter-ID cards, citizens can also apply for home loans from State Bank of India (SBI) and benefit from coin exchange facility of Canara Bank.

While the state government has set up a health check-up kiosk, Ranchi Municipal Corporation has an application submission centre for water connection. Jharkhand Tourism also has an information hub.

The kiosks have been set up at a convenient location on the premises. A visitor entering the grounds will find them on his or her right.

Visitor Naresh Sharma, regional head of a pharmaceutical firm, standing at a kiosk put up by cabinet (election) department, said the idea of setting up the kiosks was excellent.

“My wife does not have a voter ID card. Luckily, we were carrying relevant documents. So we thought this would be a good opportunity to apply for a voter-ID card,” the Kadru resident said, adding it was a coincidence that he was carrying his wife’s photographs and relevant documents.

Two passport-size photographs, proof of date of birth and address are needed to apply for voter ID or Aadhaar card. To apply for civic facilities, a photocopy of holding tax bills is needed. Those not carrying documents or photographs can return by January 10 to complete the process.

Jainandu, chairman of Jharkhand Khadi Board, said he was happy the public services kiosks were such a draw.
