2 dead in picnic brawl sequel

Jamshedpur, Jan. 1: Two persons were shot dead and another injured late in the evening at Mango in what may be a shocking fallout of a New Year picnic scuffle near Sundernagar, East Singhbhum, earlier in the day.

Around 8pm, three masked youths on a bike came to the densely populated Sankosai in Olidih thana outpost of Mango, opened eight rounds of fire and knocked out three persons, two of them fatally, before speeding away.

Shocked eye-witnesses recounted the trio had fired at cosmetics shop owner Baiju Shaw (21) twice, on his chest and face.

As Baiju slumped down dead, his shocked neighbour, Shakuntala Mishra, screamed aloud. Shakuntala, also 21 and newly married, died taking two bullets in her face.

The third person who was shot at was one Sonu Kumar Rajak (26), but he took a bullet in his right hand and is undergoing treatment at Tata Main Hospital.

Sonu, who is barely conscious, mumbled to bystanders that Baiju, who was his friend, had gone for a picnic to Jaduguda in the day with youths. On the way, Baiju and his friends apparently had a scuffle on the road with two youths who were in an SUV. The reason for the brawl is not clear, but Baiju and his friends dragged out the two youths from the SUV and thrashed them up.

It is not clear if Sonu was with Baiju and his friends. But the injured victim has said the shooting could be the fallout of today’s earlier brawl.

“Personal enmity has emerged as an angle during the preliminary probe,” said SSP Amol V. Homkar.
