Burdwan, Jan. 1: Two employees of a central rural bank have been arrested in Burdwan’s Jamalpur for allegedly siphoning off loans worth Rs 8.25 lakh that had been sanctioned to seven farmers.
The manager of Paschim Banga Gramin Bank in Jamalpur and its field officer are absconding since the arrest of the two Group D employees and another person who police said had persuaded the farmers to apply for the loans.
The trio were today produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate and remanded in five days’ police custody.
The alleged fraud came to light after farmer Akhtar Ali lodged an FIR on December 29, alleging that he had received a notice from the bank mentioning that he had not been paying instalments for loans that the agent had said had not been sanctioned.
According to the complaint, when Ali had approached bank manager Asit Chatterjee, he had shown the farmer documents that said the loans had been sanctioned.
