Calcutta, Jan. 1: Denied extra fare, a taxi driver on Park Street sped away with a girl tonight before her mother and brothers could get in, police said.
Taxi driver Umesh Prasad was arrested on the charge of molestation. Prasad had said the family could travel only if the regular fare was topped up with Rs 50, the police said.
After being refused by several taxis, the girl, who was headed for her Behala home, had got into Prasad’s taxi near Stephen Court around 9.30pm without mentioning her destination. When she tried to get off, the driver allegedly pulled her in and started speeding towards Park Circus.
The girl’s mother and two brothers, who were waiting a little distance away, raised the alarm.
The brothers chased the taxi and informed a policeman, who alerted another cop near St Xavier’s College. The taxi was intercepted near Park Street police station.
