Tezpur, Dec. 31: A 50-year-old businessman, Sanjoy Khan, was arrested today in Assam’s Lakhimpur town for allegedly gang-raping a girl along with two others on Monday.
Police said according to an FIR lodged by the girl’s family, she was returning home after filing her application form for TET around 6pm when Khan allegedly grabbed her and took her to his rented house nearby and raped her along with two others. After about three hours, the three accused allegedly dragged her out and dumped her on the street. The victim later told a television channel that she managed to reach a private hospital around 9.30pm in an auto-rickshaw. The girl, aged about 22 years, was later shifted to Lakhimpur civil hospital.
“Based on the FIR we registered a case and arrested Khan today. We are looking for the other two,” officer-in-charge of Lakhimpur police station Prafulla Gogoi said. He said Khan has been booked under Section 376 D (rape) IPC.
The police said Khan, who originally hails from Maharashtra, stays in Lakhimpur, 400km from Guwahati.
Superintendent of Lakhimpur civil hospital A.K. Buragohain said the girl’s condition was stable.
“When she was referred to here, we found her bleeding but now her condition is stable. We have conducted medical examination and are in touch with the police. The medical report of the girl will be out tomorrow.”
