Actor Ranjit Mallick is the new sheriff of Calcutta.
The announcement was made by chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday evening. The 69-year-old actor, who debuted in Mrinal Sen’s 1970 film Interview, was awarded the Banga Bibhushan in 2012. Mallick takes over from physician Swapan Kumar Ghosh. In order of precedence, the sheriff ranks below mayor. A sheriff’s tenure is of one year and starts on January 1.
“I am very, very happy. But I am yet to know about my responsibilities. I will definitely find out later,” said Mallick.
