Calcutta/Chennai: Tamil Nadu prepared a rank turner to get an outright result. But they are in trouble in the Ranji Trophy Group B game against Bengal, with as many as 16 wickets falling on Day I.
Tamil Nadu spinners — off-Malolan Rangarajan (six for 30) and left-armer Rahil Shah (four for 65) decimated Bengal for a paltry 130 in 52 overs. But the visitors, too, hit back, reducing the hosts to 66 for six, bowling 35.1 overs.
Saurasish Lahiri (two for 27), Arnab Nandi and Writtick Chatterjee, along with seasoned left-arm spinner Iresh Saxena (two for 21) did well enough to polish off Tamil Nadu’s strong top order that comprises Abhinav Mukund, Baba Aparajith, Subramaniam Badrinath, Baba Indrajith and Dinesh Karthik.
With so many wickets falling on the first day itself, the 22-yard strip has come under scanner as ball turned square right from the very first hour.
For Bengal, Subhomoy Das, who replaced the injured Sayan Sekhar Mondal, scored 36 off 49 balls with six fours and a six, giving a far better account of himself.
In reply, Tamil Nadu lost Aparajith, off the bowling of Saxena in the 11th over. Saxena picked up Mukund soon after, while Badrinath offered a catch to Shukla, giving Saurasish his first wicket.
