The Baton passes

Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne (right) hands over the baton as chairman, chiefs of staff committee, to army chief Gen. Bikram Singh in Delhi on Monday.

Singh will be the senior-most armed forces’ chief after Browne retires on Tuesday, to be succeeded by the Bengal-born Arup Raha.

Raha, currently the vice-chief of air staff, will attain the rank of air chief marshal on his elevation. A native of Hooghly’s Baidyabati near Calcutta and an alumnus of Sainik School in Purulia, Raha has over 3,500 hours of flying experience as a fighter pilot.
