Love triangle whiff in girl death

Police on Monday arrested the father of one of the boys earlier detained in connection with the death of a 14-year-old girl, whose body was fished out from Ranchi Lake on Sunday.

Businessman Ranjan Jaiswal was picked up from his Upper Bazar home as the girl’s father, also a trader and resident of the same area, mentioned his name in the FIR amid reports that the death was the result of a love triangle.

Jaiswal, along with another youth, Rajat Sharma, arrested on Sunday, were forwarded to Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar. The other two minor boys, who were also friends with the girl and detained on Sunday, were forwarded to Bal Sudhar Grih, a remand home in Dumardaga, in keeping with the Juvenile Justice Act.

“The girl’s father had initially lodged a missing report after she failed to return home on Friday. We converted it into a murder case after recovering the body yesterday (Sunday) and took necessary action,” officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station Arwind Kumar Sinha told The Telegraph.

He also clarified that the minors, who were known to the girl, a Class VIII student of Bridgeford School, had been detained and not arrested. “We kept the boys in our safe custody on Sunday and forwarded them to a remand home today (Monday),” Sinha said.

Chairperson of Jharkhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Rooplakshmi Munda and member Sanjay Mishra visited Kotwali thana to verify reports that the two had been arrested. “But the boys said that police did not put them behind bars and allowed them to speak to their parents,” Mishra said.

Although police refused to confirm it, sources said that the 14-year-old’s death appears to be the fallout of a love affair gone awry. “The girl had a relationship with both the boys. The two got to know about it. But it is not clear whether she committed suicide or was killed,” a source said.
