Woman chases snatcher

A young homemaker chased a youth who had just snatched her chain and got him arrested in Ballygunge on Monday. Police identified the accused as Sheikh Mumtaz.

Shamina Ansar, 25, wrote in her complaint that she was in a taxi that had stopped at the Ashutosh Chowdhury Avenue-Gurusaday Dutta Road crossing around 2pm.

Mumtaz, who apparently seemed to be crossing the road, allegedly came close to the taxi and snatched Shamima’s chain.

“The woman jumped out and chased the snatcher. She screamed, alerting everyone on the road. The youth ran into a lane and was caught by local people near a sweet shop. He was handed over to police,” said an officer of Ballygunge police station.

The chain, worth Rs 16,000, was recovered from Mumtaz, torn into two. The pendent attached was missing.


A homemaker was allegedly molested by four youths in front of her husband at the Rifle Range and Broad Street crossing on Sunday night. The man was allegedly assaulted. One of the accused, Mohammad Sajid, has been arrested.
