2 dead in Basanti road plunge

Two men died and as many were injured when the car they were travelling in plunged into a canal after failing to negotiate an S-shaped bend on Basanti Highway, which has seen several fatal accidents.

The two who died were Sekhar Karmakar, 27, and Debabrata Das, 30. The injured are Surajit Bachar and Monotosh Mandal.

Bachar owns the Maruti Swift — and was at its wheel — in which the four were returning home to Basirhat early on Monday. They spent the previous night at Medical College and Hospital, where one of their friends was admitted.

“It was around 6am. I was not speeding but lost control of the vehicle after swerving to the left to avoid a bus that was plying down the wrong lane from the opposite direction,” said Bachar, who was injured.

The S-shaped bend near Koila Depot, around 6km from Science City, has seen six accidents in the past year. Cars from the city have to first take a left turn, which is immediately followed by a sharp right turn. Any vehicle negotiating the bend at a moderate speed faces the risk of colliding with a vehicle from the opposite direction or hurtling into the roadside canal.
