Daman police list kidnap suspects

Patna, Dec. 30: Daman police have furnished a list of criminals suspected to be involved in the kidnapping of Sohail Hingora, a Surat-based industrialist’s son, and asked Bihar police to arrest them.

The Daman police compiled the list after interrogating Ranjit Singh, arrested during raids in Chuturpur village of Saran district on December 20. A deputy superintendent of police and an inspector from Bihar who were in Daman last week were handed the list. The team returned on Saturday.

While Ranjit was taken on police remand for further interrogation, raids were carried out at Vaishali, Lakhisarai and Munger on the basis of his revelations. “The investigation is moving in the right direction,” an IG-rank officer said.

The alleged mastermind in the case, Chandan Sonar, and his associate, Deepak Singh, remain at large. The criminal investigation department of state police has been asked to ascertain a Bihar-based gang’s link to the kidnapping case.

Ranjit’s father Nagmani Singh, an assistant sub-inspector of police in Jharkhand’s Giridih district, denied his involvement. He said he had gone to his village in Saran only to attend his Ranjit’s wedding.

Sources said video clips of the wedding show some unfamiliar faces, suspected to be involved in the kidnapping. Ranjit reportedly told interrogators that Sohail was handcuffed and covered with a shawl to avoid detection during the wedding.

The police yesterday detained the driver of a sports utility vehicle used for transporting Sohail from Chechar village in Vaishali to Chuturpur in Saran district in the first week of November. A CID team from Patna is interrogating the driver.
