Jameer scripts national records

Guwahati, Dec. 29: Md Jameer Hussain scripted three national records for hosts Assam on the concluding day of the 50th Menís and 26th Womenís Junior National Weightlifting Championship at Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here today.

With a total lift of 318kg, Hussain bettered his own national record of lifting 310kg.

He also set national records in both the snatch and clean and jerk events in the 94kg junior menís event. He lifted 140kg in snatch and 178kg in the clean and jerk event.

Hansraj of Haryana lifted a total of 293kg to walk away with the overall silver, along with a silver medal each in snatch and clean and jerk events. Champak Dutta equalled M.R. Chaitanyaís total lift of 288kg but failed to clinch the overall gold in the 105kg junior menís event. Dutta won a bronze medal in the snatch event while he managed a silver medal in the clean and jerk event. Chaitanya clinched the gold medal in the clean and jerk event.

Maharashtra emerged champions in the menís category while Andhra Pradesh finished runners-up. In the womenís category, Punjab lifted the team title and Odisha finished second.

Kojum Taba of Arunachal Pradesh was adjudged Best Lifter in the menís category while Saikhom Mirabai Chanu of Manipur bagged the Best Lifter award in the womenís category.
