JD(U) seeks House post

New Delhi, Dec. 28: The Janata Dal (United) today announced “unconditional” support for the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi but also asked for the Speaker’s post for its lone member in the Assembly, Shoaib Iqbal.

The five-time MLA is the senior-most in the new Assembly and has been a deputy Speaker. But he has a reputation for changing parties.

Iqbal had defected from Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party ahead of the recent polls. He had earlier been with the Congress and Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal.

Today, Iqbal met Arvind Kejriwal to convey his party’s support to the minority government.

“As there is no representation from the minority community in our ministry, anointing Iqbal as Speaker will send out a good message,” an AAP leader said.

However, allegations of a nexus with builders hardly make Iqbal the ideal AAP ally.
