Apurba tallies 3 medals for Assam

Guwahati, Dec. 27: Apurba Chetia tallied three medals for the hosts, clinching a gold and two silver medals in the 62kg junior men’s event in the 50th Men and 26th Women’s Junior National Weightlifting Championship at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here today.

With a total lift of 247kg, Chetia fell short of Odisha’s Achyutnanda Sahoo’s total lift of 248kg to settle for an overall silver medal, while he clinched the gold medal in the snatch event, along with another silver medal in the clean and jerk event.

Despite a bronze medal in the snatch event, Sahoo ensured a gold medal in the clean and jerk event.

Akshay Gaikwad of Maharashtra won the overall bronze medal though he managed a seventh-position finish in the snatch event and a bronze medal in the clean and jerk event.

S. Thasana Chanu of Manipur bagged the overall gold medal with a total lift of 169kg, along with a bronze medal in the snatch event and a gold medal in the clean and jerk event of the 58kg junior women weight category.

Ketaki Navale of Maharashtra won the overall silver medal with a total lift of 168kg while she clinched the gold medal in the snatch event and the bronze medal in the clean and jerk event.

Saraswat Rout of Odisha walked away with the overall bronze medal, along with the bronze in the snatch event and the silver medal in the clean and jerk event.
