Monalisha wins silver

Guwahati, Dec. 26: Monalisha Sonowal started in style for the hosts by clinching three silver medals on the inaugural day of the 50th Men and 26th Womenís Junior National Weightlifting Championship at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here today.

Sonowal won the silver medal in both snatch and clean and jerk events while she bagged the overall silver with a lift of 153kg in the 48kg junior womenís category.

S. Mirabai Chanu of Manipur tallied three gold medals in the same category, including the overall gold with a lift of 170kg. Chanu bettered her own national record by lifting 75kg in the snatch event. Sushila Majhi of Odisha ensured three bronze medals with an overall lift of 144kg. Despite a silver in the snatch event, M. Manoj Kumar of Tamil Nadu went on to clinch the overall gold with a lift of 225kg in the 56kg junior menís category, along with a gold medal in the clean and jerk event. T.B.C. Lalchhanhima of Mizoram clinched the overall silver with a lift of 223kg, along with a gold medal in the snatch event and a silver medal in the clean and jerk event. N. Srinu of Andhra Pradesh ensured the overall bronze medal with a lift of 216kg, along with another bronze medal in the snatch event.

GSA trial: The Guwahati Sports Association today named 31 probables for the selection of the district senior cricket team which will play in the Nuruddin Ahmed Senior Inter-District Tournament.

Churchand soccer: North Imphal Sporting Association will face Khetri Iril Mapal Youth Club in the first pre-quarterfinal of the 57th Sir Churchand Singh Football Tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
