Extortion worries trade body

Jorhat, Dec. 26: The district administration is proposing the imposition of Section 188 IPC to add teeth to Section 144 CrPC already in promulgation in the district.

Members of the Upper Assam Chambers of Commerce (UACC) met deputy commissioner Solanki Vishal Besant today to express concern over the rising incidence of blackmail and extortion cases, many of which go unreported.

The deputy commissioner has said he would draw up a draft, which would strengthen the implementation of Section 144 CrPC in case of violation.

Duli Chand Agarwalla, secretary of UACC, said the menace was increasing by the day with a number of organisations sprouting all over the place just to indulge in such extortion and blackmailing.

Today, four persons — Lohit Bora, Prasanta Bora, Bhaskar Saikia and Ankur Bora, — belonging to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity — Ganatantrik, were arrested under Sections 120B/143/448/294/506 for illegally trespassing into the business establishment belonging to M.D. Gattani. A case had been registered yesterday. Members of the group alleged that Gattani’s firm was selling adulterated mustard oil.
