TV actor found dead in flat

TV serial actor Atanu Mukherjee was found dead inside his apartment in Shibpur on Thursday afternoon.

He was found hanging from the ceiling of his flat on the top floor of a four-storeyed building, Amrapali, in Koipukur Lane in Shibpur.

Police said no suicide note was found and a case of unnatural death has been registered. “We are yet to ascertain whether it is a case of suicide and waiting for the post-mortem report,” said Nishad Pervez, deputy commissioner (headquarters), Howrah police.

Atanu acted in Zee Bangla serials Khela and Saat Pake Bandha. “Atanu was a fun-loving guy. He was alcoholic and had no work for a long time since we wrapped up shooting Saat Pake Bandha,” said Sushanto Das, the director of the soap.

The police have learnt that Atanu’s wife Mou Bhattacharya, a TV actress and regular in Zee Bangla’s Raage Anuraage, had been away from home since December 20 for a shooting in north Bengal.

Neighbours said they had not seen Atanu for the past three days. He apparently returned home late on Wednesday. “His cell phone was switched off for the past three days. My daughter called me up to alert Atanu’s elder brother,” said Mou’s mother Reba Bhattacharya, the president of the Howrah unit of the Paschim Banga Natya Sangha.

She called up Atanu’s brother Shantanu. who lives in Barasat. It was Shantanu who went to the flat and pushed open the main door in the presence of the police. “It is not yet clear whether the door was locked from inside or not. A forensic test will reveal that,” said a police officer.

Shantanu alleged that his brother could not have committed suicide and must have been killed. He, however, did not lodge any complaint till late on Thursday.
