Dec. 26: The body of a zilla parishad chief executive officer from Assam was today found floating in a pond adjacent to the Sunderbans resort in which he had put up.
Ranjit Kumar Bhattacharyya, the chief executive officer of Golaghat zilla parishad, had checked into the resort on Dayapur island on December 24.
South 24-Parganas police chief Praveen Tripathi said preliminary investigation had revealed that Bhattacharyya had drowned. “After having dinner on December 25, people last saw him going towards the pond. He could have slipped and fallen into it,” Tripathi said, adding that the body would be sent for post-mortem tomorrow.
An officer of the Sunderbans coastal police station, under which the private resort at Dayapur falls, said tonight that an unnatural death case had been registered.
“We visited the resort this noon following information from the resort authorities that a body was floating in the pond near the compound. We recovered the body with the help of the resort’s employees,” he said.
Bhattacharyya, a resident of Jorhat, had gone on a trip to the Sunderbans through a travel agent in Golaghat. His family said Bhattacharyya last contacted them around 9.30pm yesterday.
The officer was on leave from December 21 to 29.
