Tease, trouble cuffs for 15

Jamshedpur police, determined to ensure peaceful celebrations during Christmas, arrested as many as 15 youths on Wednesday for eve-teasing, rash driving and consuming liquor at public places.

Several of those arrested from Jubilee Park and adjoining Tata Steel Zoological Park had female companions, but police let the girls go home.

Confirming the arrests, officer-in-charge of Bistupur police station Awdesh Kumar Yadav said the 15 were picked up from different spots at Jubilee Park and Tata zoo during surprise raids between 3pm and 5pm.

“The youths have been arrested under Section 151 of the IPC. Though it is a bailable section, the accused will be released only after furnishing a personal release bond,” Yadav told The Telegraph.

He added that while five of the youths were rounded up for rash driving at the crowded Jubilee Park, five were drinking alcohol, while another five were taken into custody for passing lewd comments at girls.

“We began the drive against troublemakers at Jubilee Park today (Wednesday) in keeping with an instruction issued by senior superintendent of police Amol V. Homkar at a crime review meeting recently. The crackdown will continue throughout the festive season, when crowds swell at picnic spots and other getaways, and end only after New Year,” Yadav said.

Over 50 policemen belonging to Jharkhand Armed Police, including women personnel, have been deployed to keep an eye on the park and the zoo. The personnel have to spread out across the park to frisk anyone they suspect to be carrying narcotics or liquor.

They also have to haul up those speeding on bikes inside the park.

A popular spot for tourists and picnickers, Jubilee Park draws over 5,000 people during Christmas. The crowd count goes up in New Year.
