Criminal killed in gunfight

Jamshedpur, Dec. 25: A gang war unfolded about 40km from the heart of the steel city in Galudih in the small hours of Wednesday, killing a criminal who was wanted by the police of several districts.

Police recovered the bullet-riddled body of 35-year-old Mohammed Maqsood Alam, a resident of Rangaon in Ranchi Tamar, from a ditch near Ganga Hotel along NH-33 on the basis of information given by one of the assailants, who was arrested from the spot. Maqsood’s body bore four bullet marks and his neck was slit.

The arrested, Dildar Hussain (28), belongs to the Chowda Raju gang having its base in Ichagarh block of Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Hussain also hails from Ichagarh.

According to officer-in-charge of Galudih police station Yogendra Paswan, they came to know about the exchange of fire between the two criminal gangs around 12.45am.

“Local residents heard the gunshots and informed us. We immediately alerted MGM police station so that they could gherao the area. When we arrived at the scene, the two gangs in separate SUVs started fleeing. But MGM police managed to arrest one of them, who was later identified as Dildar Hussain, a member of the Chowda Raju gang,”Paswan said.

MGM police later handed over Hussain to Galudih police. During interrogations, Hussain revealed that they had gone to the spot to kill Maqsood. Galudih police immediately launched a search along NH-33 and found Maqsood lying dead in a ditch near the hotel.

“Hussain said that Chowda Raju came to know about Maqsood’s movement plans along the NH-33 on Tuesday. He and three associates had been waiting in an SUV for Maqsood at Dimna Chowk since 10pm on Tuesday. As soon as Maqsood’s vehicle crossed the chowk around 12.30am, Raju followed him and finally, intercepted him near Ganga Hotel at 12.45am. Raju and his aides started shooting at Maqsood’s vehicle, triggering counter fire,” the Galudih OC added.

Raju also slit Maqsood’s neck after pumping four bullets in his chest. It is still not clear whether any other member of the two gangs had sustained injuries or not.
