Malda girl better

Malda, Dec. 24: The girl who was raped here on Saturday and had an iron rod thrust down her throat is responding to treatment and the infection in her throat has reduced, doctors at the Malda Medical College and Hospital said today.

“The tube attached to the girl’s throat because of the rupture of her vocal cord was replaced today. The infection around her throat has reduced to some extent and the girl is responding to treatment. But she is still critical,” M.A. Rashid, the vice-principal said.

Prabir Mondal, head of the hospital’s ENT department, said: “It would take time for her to recover. We are putting our best efforts to ensure that she gets the best treatment.”

Malda police chief Kalyan Mukherjee said: “We are collecting evidences and want to submit the charge sheet at the earliest. We are yet to carry out tests on Abhay Mondal who raped the girl. Once the girl is fit, we will arrange for submission of her statement. The medical report confirming rape has reached us.”
