Cops seize SUV with illegal booze, cash

Police arrested one person and seized 600 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor without documents, Rs 1.49 lakh in cash from a vehicle that was going from Jamshedpur to Gamharia in adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district in the small hours of Tuesday.

Officers of Adityapur and Gamharia police station jointly intercepted the SUV at a checkpoint on Tata-Kandra Road near Gamharia thana during a surprise raid around 12.30am.

Of the two men inside the vehicle, driver Rajendra Chowdhury was nabbed while the other managed to flee.

Seraikela-Kharsawan superintendent of police (SP) Indrajit Mahthe said the liquor consignment was being taken to one Manoj Sahu’s godown in Seraikela. Sahu is the owner of a liquor syndicate in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

“Though Sahu has a valid licence for running the liquor syndicate, the men carrying the seized consignment did not have any papers to prove that the shipment was genuine,” said Mahthe.

Liquor bottles without papers mean excise duty had been evaded. The possibility of the booze being spurious could not be ruled out.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the SP said they raided Sahu’s office after interrogating driver Chowdhury, but even the former was missing.

Mahthe said they would send samples of each brand of liquor seized to a lab in Ranchi to ascertain if the booze was spurious.
