Girl stabbed on way back from school

Bolpur, Dec. 24: A 17-year-old girl was repeatedly stabbed by a youth in Birbhum today when she was returning home from her sewing school along with a lady teacher.

The girl, admitted to Rampurhat sub-divisional hospital with multiple injuries on her back and right hand, is critical, doctors said. “She has got deep cuts. We have given her six stitches,” hospital superintendent Himadri Halder said.

While police and the girl’s neighbours in Nalhati said she wanted to end her relationship with the youth, the victim’s father said she was attacked over a “property dispute”. The girl also denied having an affair with the youth.

The attacker, 25-year-old Bakul Sheikh, got admitted to Nalhati block primary hospital, claiming to have consumed pesticide, but ran away from there when the police went to arrest him. He was arrested later from Nalhati railway station.

The police said they suspected that Bakul, who cleans trucks, had staged the suicide bid to make it appear that he was not present at the crime scene.

Set ablaze

A 15-year-old Nadia girl was today dragged out of her home, doused in kerosene and set on fire by a spurned youth.
