Guwahati, Dec. 23: Assam today took a 40-run first innings lead against hosts Jharkhand on the second day of their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy under-19 plate group B match in Ranchi.
Chasing Assamís first innings total of 213, the hosts resumed at overnight 41 for two but were bowled out for 173 in 61 overs in the first innings, thanks to some tight bowling Mrinmoy Dutta and Amar Alam. Assam were 95 for one in 31.2 overs in the second innings when play was called off nearly 40 minutes before schedule because of bad light.
M. Siddiqui and K. Singh scored 33 runs each, sharing a 58-run third wicket partnership before both were dismissed in quick succession, triggering the collapse of the hostsí innings.
Sumit Kumar anchored the innings amid the ruins, topscoring for the side with 55 (11x4) as wickets tumbled at regular intervals at the other end.
He snicked one from Mrinmoy Dutta to be caught behind by glovesman Wasiqur Rahman.
Dutta returned with the figures of four for 79 and Amar Alam took the scalp of three for 27. Pacer Rajakuddin Ahmed also picked up two for 43.
Urooj Rizvi (22, 2x4) and Yatin Malik (batting on 56, 7x4) gave Assam a solid start to the second innings sharing a 95-run opening partnership before Rizvi ran himself out. Hrishikesh Tamuli was also batting on eight at the other end at close.
A win or the first innings lead if the match ends in a draw will help Assam book a berth in knockouts.
