Guwahati, Dec. 23: Monalisha Sonowal today tallied three gold medals for hosts Assam in the 48-kg youth girls’ weight category in the ninth National Youth Boys’ and Girls’ Weightlifting Championship at Deshabhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here today.
She lifted a total of 144kg, including 63kg in snatch and 81kg in clean and jerk, for gold in all three.
On the other hand, Manipur swept the major honours in the youth girls category with a total of 12 medals, including six gold, five silver and a bronze. M. Purnima Chanu bagged a gold in the snatch, clean and jerk and an overall gold medal respectively in the 53kg youth girls’ category while S. Thasana Chanu, with an overall lift of 167kg along with a gold in the snatch and clean and jerk categories of the 58kg weight category.
Kh. Nungshiton Chanu managed three silver medals with an overall silver and a silver medal each in the snatch and clean and jerk categories of the 58kg weight category. P. Ganga Devi clinched the overall silver in the snatch category and a bronze medal in the clean and jerk category of the 48kg weight category.
Deepak Lather of Haryana clinched a gold medal each in the snatch, clean and jerk and an overall gold respectively in the 50kg youth boys’ weight category. Visually impaired Ramesh Parapati of Andhra Pradesh won the overall silver with total lift of 172kg along with two silver medals in the snatch and clean and jerk category.
Mohini Chavan of Maharashtra managed the overall gold despite of a bronze in the snatch category and a silver medal in the clean and jerk event of the 44kg youth girls weight category while Chandrika Tarafdar with an overall lift of 131kg managed the overall silver medal.
