Tezpur/Lakhimpur, Dec. 23: Two unidentified men today shot dead an employee of a private finance company and looted more than Rs 5.13 lakh in cash when he was going to deposit the amount at an SBI branch in Lakhimpur district in Assam.
Lakhimpur is 395km from Guwahati.
According to sources, the incident took place at 11.30am when Satyajit Konwar, 40, stepped out of his office of Sri Ram Finance Company Ltd in the Khelmati area in Lakhimpur town to deposit money at the bank.
Sources said two men came on a bike, shot Konwar and looted the entire amount collected from customers as EMIs.
Prafulla Bora, the officer-in-charge of Lakhimpur Sadar police station, said the duo fired thrice at Konwar. He said they had used small arms. Eyewitnesses could not note down the bike’s registration number.
Konwar was immediately rushed to Lakhimpur civil hospital for treatment. He was declared dead at the hospital.
Lakhimpur deputy commissioner Gaurav Bothra said Konwar used to carry cash to deposit at the nearest SBI branch.
Police investigation has revealed that Konwar was going to the SBI branch, 1km from his office, today and not Axis Bank as suspected earlier. Axis Bank and the company’s office are in the same premises.
Konwar was shot from close range as soon as he stepped out of his office. The men fled after snatching the bag which contained the cash.
Residents alleged that the company never arranged for security personnel to accompany the employees when they went to the bank.
