Murder heat on Anubrata

Calcutta, Dec. 23: Calcutta High Court today handed over to the CID the probe of the murder of an Independent panchayat poll candidate’s father in Birbhum and said the investigation should be based on an FIR naming district Trinamul chief Anubrata Mondal.

The ruling by Justice Sanjib Banerjee followed a September 13 petition by Independent candidate Hriday Ghosh’s wife, who had alleged that Birbhum police carried out the probe on another complaint they wrote themselves.

The public prosecutor didn’t object to the proceedings.

Hriday’s father Sagar Ghosh was shot on July 20, two days before the panchayat polls in Birbhum.

Later, Hriday’s wife Shibani lodged a complaint against 41 Trinamul workers, including Mondal, who had on July 17 called upon party workers to set ablaze houses of Independent candidates and hurl bombs at policemen if they came to their rescue.

After the petition in September, the judge had asked the police to file a report and explain why the FIR by Hriday’s wife was not being followed. The report failed to satisfy Justice Banerjee, who today handed over the probe to the CID.

Mondal could not be contacted.
