Mukul plea to defy strike

Shillong, Dec. 22: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma today exhorted citizens to emulate the people of Garo hills in defying the dawn-to-dusk shutdown called by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) from 6am tomorrow.

Last year, the people of Garo hills had openly defied a shutdown imposed by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

“People must replicate the example set by the citizens of Garo hills who had defied the shutdown called by the GNLA,” Sangma said.

The HNLC had come under severe criticism from various quarters for calling the shutdown during the ongoing festive season.

“They (HNLC) are hiding in foreign soil and operating from across the border,” Sangma added.

The East Khasi Hills district administration has also appealed to the citizens, shopkeepers, and all sections of society to come out in large numbers tomorrow like on any other weekday.

East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said security forces would be deployed throughout the city to ensure proper security throughout the district.

Public transport, including buses and taxis, will ply for the benefit of commuters.
