Boy dies at airport

An eight-year-old boy died at the Calcutta airport on Sunday afternoon after he fell ill on board a Chennai-bound flight that returned minutes after take-off.

Spandan Barua of Bangladesh, who was suffering from congenital cardiac ailments, was on a SpiceJet flight with his father to Chennai for treatment, airport officials said. The duo had arrived from Dhaka on Saturday.

The flight, carrying 173 passengers, took off at 4.13pm but soon the pilot contacted the air traffic control and informed it about Spandan, who had fallen ill on board.

The flight returned at 5.30pm and Spandan was wheeled to the medical attendance room at the terminal. Later, he was taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
