Aditya and Kamal in title clash

Calcutta: Aditya Mehta and Kamal Chawla will fight for the title in the Kolkata Open National Invitation Snooker Championship, at the Hindusthan Club, on Sunday.

Aditya and Kamal won their respective semi-finals on Saturday, by an identical margin of 5-2, against Manan Chandra and Brijesh Damani.

Aditya, however, did face a bit of a tough time during the initial stages. The going will certainly get tougher for Aditya in the decider as his opponent Kamal is in great form. Kamal had beaten Aditya 3-1 in the league stage of this tournament.

Kamal got off to a terrific start against local favourite Brijesh, winning the first frame 69-14. He seemed to lose his rhythm temporarily, with Brijesh bouncing back to win the next two at 64-22, 58-41.

However, having rectified his errors quickly, Kamal regained composure and turned the tables on his rival, winning the next four frames 67-19, 65-58, 57-54, 75-32 to seal the match.

In the quarter final, Kamal had blanked Siddharth Parikh 80-38, 76-22, 87-06, 65-12.

Aditya had some hiccups on the way, losing the first couple of frames 00-104, 19-68. But thereafter, he made a terrific comeback to clinch the next five — 79-56, 78-18, 86-26, 63-58, 77-01 — to pocket the match.

“I didn’t start well and was trailing 0-2. Then in the third frame, he missed the crucial pink ball and gave me a chance to make a comeback,” Aditya said later.

“I think I was let off the hook. I have to very patient and play with more intent in the final. Hopefully, it will be a Super Sunday for me.”

Aditya had outplayed Yasin Merchant 4-0 in the quarter final.
