Deadlock on bridge ends

Jorhat, Dec. 21: The confrontation between the army and the district administration on building an RCC bridge over a rivulet at Kamandulia Kohar Gohain Gaon on the southern outskirts of the town has been resolved amicably.

The administration has recently begun construction. The army had for long opposed building of the bridge near its supply depot as it was perceived to be a security threat. A district administration official said in July the army did not allow construction of the bridge and later the monsoon set in.

“When work resumed on Wednesday, the army again obstructed it, but the deputy commissioner made them understand that the project which would benefit a large number of people should not be stopped,” he said.

The army was not in favour of the bridge on the ground that once it comes up, flow of traffic would increase, impacting the security of Saraibahi military station.
