Calcutta, Dec. 21: The state government today placed the joint secretary of the industrial reconstruction department on compulsory waiting for allegedly reinstating a jute mill manager without permission.
“A.K. Singh, a senior WBCS official in charge of the jute mills section, had neither informed the government nor taken its approval before reinstating the mill manager,” a minister said.
Senior state government officials said the manager of New Central Jute Mill at Budge Budge in South 24-Parganas, where the government has a 40 per cent stake, had resigned from the post in 2012.
“But he was reinstated in the same post a few months ago. In official records, it was shown that the manager had been on leave for six months. His resignation letter could not be found. Later, documents related to his resignation were traced,” an official said.
The matter came to light after the Trinamul-led union at the mill launched an agitation a few days ago protesting “financial irregularities” at the factory.
The official said it was not clear what action would be taken against the manager.
